During October 2001 and September 2006, the Regional Development Agencies registered 517 investment projects, exceeding the equivalent of USD 1 million (benefiting of the incentives granted by Law no. 332/2001 regarding the direct investment with significant impact on Romanian economy). The total value assumed for these projects is more than USD 6.113 billion, the foreign share representing USD 4,297 million representing 70.29% of the total.
From these projects, 320 were finalized, with a value of USD 2.667 billion.
In September 2006, foreign direct investment with significant impact in economy were 6.863 million USD – Brownfield.
The investments were registered in the following main fields:
- Telecommunications: 58 projects with assumed value of USD 1,336 million, representing 21.86% from the total;
- Wood processing: 22 projects with assumed value of USD 657 million, representing 10.74% from the total;
- Services- 66 projects with assumed value of USD 811 million, representing 13.26% from the total;
- Trade- 96 projects with assumed value of USD 728 million, representing 12.03% from the total;
- Energy sector- 24 projects with assumed value of USD 436 million, representing 7.12% from the total;
- Machine building- 40 projects with assumed value of USD 480 million, representing 7.85% from the total;
- Constructions and constructions materials- 41 projects with assumed value of USD 366 million, representing 5.99% from the total;
- Electronics – 16 projects with assumed value of USD 232 million, representing 3.80% from the total;
- Metallurgy- 18 projects with assumed value of USD 231 million, representing 3.78% from the total; Electronics and electro techniques- 16 projects with assumed value of USD 232 million, representing 3.80 % from the total.
A classification by value, indicates that were registered 6 projects over USD 100 million, 16 projects with value between USD 50 and 100 million, 154 projects with value between USD 10 and 50 million, the rest until 517 being projects with value between USD 1 and 10 million.
1. As concerns the regional spreading, most projects were registered in:
Bucuresti-Ilfov Development Region - 288 projects, with assumed value of USD 3.798 million, representing 62.09% from the total, of which foreign investment 2.801 million USD, representing 45.81%;
2. Centru Development Region (counties Alba, Brasov, Covasna, Harghita, Mures, Sibiu) – 79 investment projects, with assumed value of USD 780 million, representing 12.76%, of which foreign investment USD 465 million, representing 7.61% from general total;
3. South-Muntenia Development Region (counties Arges, Calarasi, Dambovita, Giurgiu, Ialomita, Prahova, Teleorman) - 38 projects, with assumed value of USD 530 million, representing 8.67% from the total, of which foreign investment USD 407 million, representing 6.66%.
As concerns the country of origin, foreign investors that registered investment projects in value exceeding USD 1 million, are coming from the Netherlands, with USD 1,357 million, representing 22.2% of total investment, followed by Austria with USD 722 million, representing 11.81%, from France, with USD 504 million, representing 8.25% from the total investment and from Germany with USD 444 million, representing 7.26% from the total investment.
